Product Overview

What the IR-4EX1 delivers

The IR-4EX1 IR Extender by Milestone enables control of up to four A/V devices using a single infrared remote. The unit accepts one sensor input and distributes the received IR signal to four transmit LED outputs, allowing multiple devices to respond simultaneously from a single remote command.

This makes it practical to keep A/V equipment out of sight — behind a cabinet door, in a back corner of a room, or in an entirely separate room — while retaining full remote control from a convenient viewing or operating position. The sensor cable can be routed up to 10 metres and the remote can be used from up to 7 metres away from the sensor, giving considerable flexibility in how the installation is arranged.

The IR LED transmitter cables run up to 5 metres each, and with two LEDs per 4-pin connector, the IR-4EX1 ships with two connectors to cover all four transmit outputs. LEDs are placed directly in front of the equipment’s IR receiver window, and no line-of-sight to the sensor is required from the A/V devices themselves.

Setup requires no programming. Connecting the sensor cable to the D9 male connector, attaching the transmitter LED cables with correct polarity, and powering the unit via the 230V mains input is all that is needed to begin operation. LED indicators on both the front panel and the sensor cable confirm that IR signals are being received and transmitted correctly.

Key Features

Practical IR control across four devices

One sensor input, four transmit outputs, and a setup that requires no programming. The IR-4EX1 is built to extend remote control reliably across A/V installations of all scales.

1 Sensor Input, 4 Transmit LED Outputs

The IR-4EX1 accepts one IR sensor input via a D9 male connector and distributes the captured signal to four transmit LED outputs across two 4-pin phono connectors, each carrying two LEDs. This allows a single remote command to be relayed to up to four separate A/V devices simultaneously.

7 Metre Remote Operating Distance

The sensor is designed to receive IR commands from a standard remote control at distances of up to 7 metres. This provides ample range for typical room installations, ensuring the user does not need to be close to the sensor to operate the connected A/V equipment reliably.

Flexible Cable Lengths for Sensor and LED

The IR sensor cable supports lengths of up to 10 metres, allowing the sensor to be placed at an accessible location away from the main unit. Each IR LED transmitter cable runs up to 5 metres, giving enough reach to position the LEDs precisely in front of the equipment's IR receiver window regardless of its location in the room or cabinet.

No Programming Required

The IR-4EX1 operates without any configuration or programming. Once the sensor cable is connected to the D9 male connector, the LED transmitter cables are attached with correct polarity, and the unit is powered, it is ready for immediate use. This keeps installation time low and eliminates the need for specialist setup knowledge.

LED Status Indication

The IR-4EX1 includes LED indicators at two locations: on the front panel of the main unit and near the sensor on the sensor cable. These indicators confirm that IR signals are being received at the sensor and that the unit is powered, making it straightforward to verify the system is operating correctly during installation and ongoing use.

Compatible with a Wide Range of A/V Equipment

The IR-4EX1 is compatible with any A/V equipment that responds to standard infrared remote control signals, including televisions, projectors, LCD panels, DVD players, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes. Up to four such devices can be controlled simultaneously, making the unit well suited to multi-device installations where a single operator controls all equipment.

Installation

Three-step connection, no programming needed

The IR-4EX1 is installed by connecting the sensor cable, attaching the LED transmitter cables to the connected devices, and powering the unit. The entire setup requires no configuration or software.

01

Connect the IR Sensor Cable

Connect the IR sensor cable of the required length (standard 2 metres is supplied) to the D9 male connector located at the rear of the unit. Position the sensor at a location where it has clear line-of-sight to the area from which the remote will be used. The sensor cable supports lengths up to 10 metres, allowing placement flexibility in the room.

02

Attach IR Transmitter LED Cables

Connect the IR transmitter LED cables to the 4-pin phono connectors at the rear of the unit, observing correct polarity. The IR-4EX1 has two phono connectors, each carrying two LED outputs, for a total of four transmit LEDs. Position each LED directly in front of the IR receiver window on the corresponding A/V device. LED cables extend up to 5 metres each.

03

Power and Verify Operation

Connect the unit to a 230V mains supply to power it on. Once powered, point the remote control at the sensor cable and verify that the LED indicators on the front panel and near the sensor cable illuminate when commands are sent. If the status LEDs respond, the unit is operating correctly and the connected devices will receive and respond to IR commands.

04

Place Connected Devices Out of Sight

With the sensor and LEDs in position, the A/V devices themselves can be stored out of direct view, including inside cabinets, behind panels, in back corners of a room, or in a separate room altogether. As long as each LED is placed near the device's IR window, the user can operate all equipment from the sensor's location using a single remote, without requiring physical access to the devices.

Ideal Applications

Where the IR-4EX1 performs

Designed for professional and residential A/V environments where multiple devices need to be controlled from a single remote, with equipment placed out of direct sight.

Home Theatre Setups

Ideal for professional-grade home theatre installations where the TV, projector, Blu-ray player, and set-top box are housed inside a dedicated AV cabinet. The IR-4EX1 lets all four devices respond to a single remote from the viewing position without requiring cabinet doors to remain open.

Corporate Boardrooms

In corporate meeting rooms, A/V equipment such as projectors, video players, and display systems is often stored in a rack or cabinet away from the presenter. The IR-4EX1 extends remote control access to up to four such devices from the presentation area, keeping the room neat and the operator in control.

Educational and Training Rooms

In classrooms and training facilities, the IR-4EX1 allows teachers or trainers to operate a DVD player, projector, set-top box, and LCD display from a single remote, even when all equipment is stored inside a locked AV trolley or media cabinet at the front of the room.

Digital Signage and Retail Displays

Retail and signage environments that run multiple display screens from individual media players benefit from centralised IR control. The IR-4EX1 allows operators to control up to four media devices simultaneously without needing direct access to each unit, making content management faster and less disruptive to the environment.

Hospitality and Hotel Rooms

Hotel room installations frequently require TV, set-top box, and media player devices to be concealed within furniture. The IR-4EX1 enables guests to use a single remote to control all concealed devices, keeping the room aesthetically clean while maintaining full functionality from the bed or seating area.

AV Rack and Equipment Room Installations

When A/V equipment is housed in a separate equipment room or a rack enclosure, the IR-4EX1 bridges the control gap. The sensor is positioned in the operator's room, and the LED transmitters are routed into the rack, enabling full remote control of up to four rack-mounted devices without opening the rack or entering the equipment room.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs about the IR-4EX1 IR Extender

The IR-4EX1 is an IR extender that lets you control up to four A/V devices using a single infrared remote. It accepts one sensor input and distributes the received IR signal to four transmit LED outputs. This means your TV, projector, DVD player, and set-top box can all respond to commands from a single remote, even when those devices are stored out of direct sight inside a cabinet, in a back corner, or in a separate room.

The sensor is designed to receive IR commands from a distance of up to 7 metres. This range is suitable for typical room-sized installations. The sensor cable itself can be routed up to 10 metres from the main unit, giving additional flexibility in placing the sensor at the most convenient location for the user.

Each IR LED transmitter cable on the IR-4EX1 can extend up to 5 metres. This allows each LED to be precisely positioned in front of the IR receiver window of the target device, even if that device is located some distance from the main unit. The IR-4EX1 has two 4-pin phono connectors, each supplying two LED outputs, giving four cable runs of up to 5 metres each.

No. The IR-4EX1 requires no programming or configuration of any kind. Installation involves connecting the sensor cable to the D9 male connector, attaching the LED transmitter cables to the phono connectors with correct polarity, placing each LED near the respective device’s IR window, and connecting the unit to a 230V mains supply. The unit is ready to operate immediately after these steps are completed.

The IR-4EX1 is compatible with any A/V equipment that uses standard infrared remote control, including televisions, projectors, LCD panels, DVD players, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes. As long as the device accepts commands from an IR remote, the IR-4EX1 can relay those commands to it through the transmit LED positioned near the device’s IR receiver window.

The IR-4EX1 includes LED status indicators at two points. One indicator is located on the front panel of the main unit and shows power status along with IR signal reception. A second indicator is positioned near the sensor on the sensor cable and lights up each time an IR command is captured. If both indicators respond when the remote is pressed toward the sensor, the unit is operating correctly and commands are being relayed to the connected devices.

Yes. Because the sensor cable extends up to 10 metres and the LED cables extend up to 5 metres each, the IR-4EX1 can be installed with the sensor in one room and the A/V devices in another. The sensor captures remote control commands from the user’s location and the unit relays them through the LED cables to wherever the devices are positioned, regardless of whether they are in direct view or behind walls and cabinets.

Milestone offers the IR extender in four configurations to suit different installation sizes. The IR-2EX1 provides one sensor input with two transmit LEDs, the IR-4EX1 provides four, the IR-6EX1 provides six, and the IR-8EX1 provides eight transmit LED outputs. All models share the same physical dimensions, sensor range, cable lengths, and mains input specification, differing only in the number of transmit LED outputs and phono connectors.
