Product Overview
What the IR-2EX1 delivers
The IR-2EX1 is an IR extender that enables you to control AV equipment from a different location to where the equipment is physically installed. Using a single IR sensor input, it captures commands from a standard IR remote and forwards them to 2 IR transmitter LED outputs placed directly in front of the devices to be controlled.
This makes it practical to install equipment such as televisions, projectors, LCDs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes inside closed cabinets, behind panels, in back corners, or in entirely separate rooms. The user retains full control using their existing remote from a convenient viewing or operating position.
The IR sensor cable can be extended up to 10 metres, offering flexibility in sensor positioning. The operating range of the IR remote from the sensor is up to 7 metres. Both the front panel of the unit and the sensor cable include LED indicators to confirm the system is operating and receiving IR signals correctly.
The unit requires no programming or configuration. Connection involves attaching the IR sensor cable to the D9 male connector and placing the transmitter LEDs near each device to be controlled, making setup quick and straightforward for professional AV and home theater installations alike.

Installation
Three-step connection setup
The IR-2EX1 installs in three straightforward steps with no programming needed. Connect the sensor, attach the transmitter LEDs to the controlled devices, and the unit is operational.
01
Connect the IR Sensor Cable
Connect the IR sensor cable of the required length, standard at 2 metres and extendable up to 10 metres, into the D9 male connector at the rear of the unit. Position the sensor in a location that is within direct line of sight of the IR remote, typically in the room where the user will operate the system.
02
Attach the IR Transmitter LED Cables
Connect the IR transmitter LED cables at the 4-pin Phoenix connector at the rear, observing correct polarity. Position each of the 2 LEDs directly in front of the IR receiver window of the device to be controlled. LED cables are 5 metres in length, providing reach for equipment installed inside cabinets or in adjacent spaces.
Where the IR-2EX1 performs
Suited to any environment where AV equipment must be placed out of sight or at a distance from the user, while still being controlled with a standard IR remote.
Home Theater Setups
Install AV equipment such as Blu-ray players and set-top boxes inside a closed cabinet while retaining full remote control from the viewing area. The IR-2EX1 passes commands through to 2 devices simultaneously without any line-of-sight requirement.
Conference and Presentation Rooms
Control projectors, displays, or media players from the front of a conference room even when the source equipment is mounted at the rear or stored in a rack. Eliminates the need for physical access to AV equipment during presentations.
AV Equipment Cabinets and Racks
Place all AV equipment inside a dedicated cabinet or equipment rack for a clean, organised room appearance. The sensor captures commands outside the cabinet while LEDs relay them directly to each device inside.
Office Security and Surveillance Systems
Operate DVR units, monitors, or display systems in office security environments where equipment is installed in secure areas but needs to be operated from a front-of-room or reception position using a single remote.
Residential Living Rooms
Create a clean, cable-free room appearance by hiding all AV equipment in a back corner or side unit. The IR-2EX1 keeps up to 2 devices fully operational from the sofa using the same remote, with no changes to viewing habits.
Educational and Training Rooms
Allow teachers and trainers to control projectors or DVD players installed at a distance without breaking the flow of a session. Equipment can be installed out of the way while the instructor operates it from anywhere in the room.

FAQs about the IR-2EX1
What is the IR-2EX1 used for?
The IR-2EX1 is an IR extender that allows you to control AV equipment using an IR remote from a different location to where the equipment is installed. It is suited to situations where devices such as TVs, projectors, LCDs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes are placed inside cabinets, in back corners, or in a separate room. The unit captures the IR command from the remote via a sensor and retransmits it to the equipment through 2 LED transmitters.
How many devices can the IR-2EX1 control simultaneously?
The IR-2EX1 has 2 IR LED transmitter outputs, which allows it to control up to 2 AV devices at the same time. Both LED outputs receive the same IR command captured by the sensor, so both connected devices respond simultaneously when the remote is used.
What is the maximum operating range of the remote from the IR sensor?
The IR remote can be used at a distance of up to 7 metres from the IR sensor. This provides a comfortable operating range for most rooms. The IR sensor cable itself can be extended up to 10 metres from the unit, giving flexibility in positioning the sensor in the most effective location to receive remote commands.
Does the IR-2EX1 require any programming or configuration?
No. The IR-2EX1 requires no programming of any kind. Once the IR sensor cable is connected to the D9 male connector at the rear and the LED transmitter cables are attached to the 4-pin Phoenix connector and positioned near the devices to be controlled, the unit operates immediately without any additional setup steps.
How do I know the unit is working correctly after installation?
The IR-2EX1 includes LED indicators at two points. One LED is on the front panel of the unit and indicates power and IR sensor status. A second LED is located near the sensor on the sensor cable and lights up when an IR signal is being received. Both indicators together confirm that the unit is powered and actively picking up remote commands.
Can the IR-2EX1 be used if I need to control more than 2 devices?
The IR-2EX1 supports 2 IR LED outputs. If you need to control more than 2 devices from a single sensor, Milestone offers other models in the same IR Extender series, including the IR-4EX1 (4 outputs), IR-6EX1 (6 outputs), and IR-8EX1 (8 outputs), all sharing the same form factor and operating principles. These allow up to 8 devices to be controlled from a single sensor input.
What type of AV equipment is compatible with the IR-2EX1?
The IR-2EX1 is compatible with any AV device that can be controlled by a standard infrared remote. This includes televisions, projectors, LCDs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes. As long as the device has an IR receiver and works with a remote, the IR-2EX1 can extend the remote’s reach to that device.
